Template:Split article/doc

From MOASSpedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

When copying material from one Wikipedia article to another, you can put this template on the talk page of both articles, to indicate that its page history contains the GFDL attribution to Wikipedian contributors of the material that lies elsewhere.

Notes also need to be put in edit summaries of both articles; see Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure.

Usage

{{split article
| from = name of page material was removed from
| from_oldid = permanent link url or revisionid from which the material was copied
| to = name of page material was copied to
| diff = url or either a single revisionid or a diff of two revisionids separated by a slash showing the addition of the material
| date = date and time material was moved
}}

The |from=, |to= and |date= fields are required.

The |from_oldid= and |diff= fields are optional, but using them makes it easier for readers and editors to trace the split. Where the page was created with the split material as the first edit, the diff parameter cannot be accessed in the normal radio button, comparison mode in the page history. Instead, navigate to the permanent link for the first edit, and copy the "oldid". For example, where the end of the URL is &oldid=271444811, the revisionid is 271444811. When using two revisionids, the oldid should be first, followed by a slash and the diff. If you have trouble using the revisionids, you can use the whole url.

The same template code may be copied and used on both talk pages: the talk page of the article that was split and the talk page of the new article receiving the split content. If the receiving article already had content, you may wish to use {{Merged-from}}, instead.

Multiple splits

Additional splits from the same article can be specified by adding a number after each variable, so the second split would use |to2=, |date2=, |from_oldid2= and |diff2= and so on:

{{ split article
| from = name of page material was removed from
| to  =
| from_oldid  =
| diff  =
| date  =
| to2 =
| from_oldid2 =
| diff2 =
| date2 =
| to3 =
| from_oldid3 =
| diff3 =
| date3 =
}}

Up to ten splits are currently supported. They must all have the same |from= article in common, as this parameter doesn't support a number on the end. If these limits are reached, just add another transclusion of this template and split the information between them. If copying this code to the talk page of an article which has been split off, only |to= parameters for that particular article need to be included. Others should be removed to avoid clutter, along with the corresponding |date=, |from_oldid= and |diff=. After any removals, the parameters may need renumbering to avoid dropping them after a number is skipped.

The |collapse= parameter can be used to collapse some or all of the listed items. Set |collapse=yes to collapse all items, or |collapse=4 to hide all entries below |date4= for instance.
