Before turning NASTRO comment into an article, please check whether the content will satisfy the guidelines for astronomical object notability. In particular, the object must have significant coverage from independent, reliable sources. Just because an object is listed in a database (like the JPL Small-Body Database) does not mean it is notable.
Wikidata
From a cross-project redirect: This is a redirect that is used as a connection to other Wikimedia projects. A Wikidata element is linked to this page:
Lua error in Module:Wd at line 196: attempt to index field 'wikibase' (a nil value). (Lua error in Module:Wd at line 196: attempt to index field 'wikibase' (a nil value).).
Symbol redirect arrow with gradient.svg This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
  • To a list entry: This is a redirect to a list in which the subject is an entry.
    • For redirects from a topic to a related list and not to an entry on that list, use R from list topic instead.
  • To an embedded anchor: This is a redirect from a topic that does not have its own page to an embedded anchor on the redirect's target page.
    • An (anchor name) or visible anchor template, a HTML element with id="(anchor name)", or an |id=(anchor name) parameter might be installed at the beginning of a paragraph, in or near a section header or within a table. The anchor might also be an old section header that has been edited and is anchored within or near the new header to prevent broken internal and external links.
    • Even though section headers of the general form ==(Header name)== are themselves a type of anchor, use R to section instead.
  • From an unprintworthy page title: This is a redirect from a title that would not be helpful in a printed or CD/DVD version of Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Printability for more helpful information.
When appropriate, protection levels are automatically sensed, described and categorized.

Description

This template manages the plethora of redirect pages of small Solar System bodies. For redirects of cometary and minor planet objects, it is mandatory to use NASTRO comment on the page (usage of correct parameters described below).

Features

The template's features include (the outcome depends on the chosen parameters):

  • Displaying a message or a warning directly on the page
  • Adding a specific redirect category (see below)
  • Adding template wikidata redirect
  • Adding a set of templates, such as R to list entry, when redirecting to an anchored list

Examples

Primary redirect for minor planet 57658 Nilrem

#REDIRECT List of minor planets: 57001–58000#658

NASTRO comment

Non-primary redirect for minor planet (57658) 2001 UJ1. This is the former designation of 57658 Nilrem (above), before it was named.

#REDIRECT List of minor planets: 57001–58000#658

As shown in the second example, custom R-templates should be added with Redirect category shell above NASTRO comment, maintaining the blank line. Also, for redirects on comets, an additional parameter |type=comet is needed (see § Comets).

Usage

  • NASTRO comment, used for primary redirects (i.e. pages with titles suited to be turned into an article if the object becomes notable one day), produces the following default message to caution editors before they begin writing an article. It links to WP:NASTRO § Dealing with minor planets for more contextual details.
Before turning title of page here into an article, please check whether the content will satisfy the guidelines for astronomical object notability. In particular, the object must have significant coverage from independent, reliable sources. Just because an object is listed in a database (like the JPL Small-Body Database) does not mean it is notable.
  • , used for non-primary redirects (i.e. pages not suited to become an article), replaces the default message with:
This redirect must not be turned into an article. A page with a more appropriate title already exists.
Do not categorize this redirect, to avoid duplication.
Use the "do-not-cat" parameter for non-primary redirects. They are typically tagged with "alternative (former) name", "incorrect spelling", "non-diacritical version", or "avoided double redirect". They should not be turned into articles as the title has been superseded. They never contain any categories.

Redirects to anchored list (R-templates)

In most cases, a redirect points to an anchored list entry. Therefore NASTRO comment displays three R-templates by default:

  • R to list entry — "To a list entry"
  • R to anchor — "To an embedded anchor"
  • R unprintworthy — "From an unprintworthy page title".

In many cases, however, a redirect does not point to a list but to an existing article instead, the above R-templates need to be turned off using |r-templates=off. See 61 Danae for an example.

Wikidata redirect template

Wikidata
From a cross-project redirect: This is a redirect that is used as a connection to other Wikimedia projects. A Wikidata element is linked to this page:
Lua error in Module:Wd at line 196: attempt to index field 'wikibase' (a nil value). (Q1485011).

Template wikidata redirect is automatically added by default. In case auto detection does not work, use parameter |wikidata-r= with Wikidata's corresponding Q-number without the Q-prefix as value:

Comets

For cometary redirects, use .

Redirect categories

Depending on the chosen parameters, redirect pages using this template are automatically listed in one of the following categories (with number of items as per Spring 2020):

Category:Minor planet object redirects (numbered) NASTRO comment, default, no parameter. 1 items
Category:Minor planet object redirects (unnumbered) 0 items
Category:Minor planet object redirects (non-primary) 0 items
Category:Cometary object redirects (primary)‎ 0 items
Category:Cometary object redirects (non-primary)‎ 0 items
