Errors

If the template generates errors when calculating data for the Gini or HDI fields, it will add the article to Category:Country articles requiring maintenance. This only happens if the page is in the main article space, not any other namespaces.

Microformat

The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

If the place or venue has an "established", "founded", "opened" or similar date that is specific to the day, use {{start date}} unless the date is before 1583 CE. If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • category
  • country-name
  • extended-address
  • fn
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • street-address
  • url
  • vcard

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.

TemplateData for Infobox country

TemplateData

This template produces an infobox for countries that covers their major attributes such as their flags, ethnic makeup, and political system.

Template parameters

This template has custom formatting.

ParameterDescriptionTypeStatus
Conventional long nameconventional_long_name

Formal or official full name of the country in English. This entry should not be enclosed in brackets.

Example
The United States of America
Stringoptional
common_namecommon_name

no description

Unknownoptional
linking_namelinking_name

no description

Unknownoptional
Native namenative_name

Country's name (usually full name) in its native language, hence in italics (double quotemarks). The template {{native name}} should be used with this parameter to automatically italicize the text.

Example
{{native name|Bundesrepublik Deutschland}}
Stringoptional
Geopolitical organisation namename

Name of the geopolitical organisation in English.

Stringoptional
Flagimage_flag

File name of an image file on Wikipedia or on Commons that contains the country's current flag. Do not enclose this entry in double brackets and do not give it a prefix such as File:

Example
Flag of Iceland.svg
Fileoptional
Flag widthflag_width

If the default widths provided for the flag and coat-of-arms/symbol images produce an unsatisfactory result, use this to specify the width to be used for the flag image; the remaining width is then assigned to the coat-of-arms/symbol (if included). Can be done as a % or px.

Stringoptional
Flag alt textalt_flag

Alternate text for flag (text shown when pointer hovers over flag).

Stringoptional
Flag borderflag_border

Set to no to disable border around the flag.

Stringoptional
Flag captionflag_caption

Use this parameter to enter a caption for the flag, if one is necessary. Do not end this entry with a period.

Example
1992 version of the flag prior to the country's dissolution
Stringoptional
Second flagimage_flag2

If a country has a second flag— perhaps because of an ongoing civil war or a dispute over sovereignty— you can provide the file name of that second flag in this parameter. Do not include the prefix File:, and do not enclose it in double brackets.

Example
Secondflag of Namibia.svg
Fileoptional
Second flag alt textalt_flag2

Alt text for second flag (text shown when pointer hovers over flag).

Notes

  1. ^ There is no authorised version of the national anthem as the words are a matter of tradition; only the first verse is usually sung.[1]
  2. ^ Scots, Ulster Scots, Welsh, Cornish, Scottish Gaelic and Irish are classed as regional or minority languages under the Council of Europe's European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.[2] These include defined obligations to promote those languages.[3][4][5] See also Languages of the United Kingdom. Welsh has limited de jure official status in Wales, as well as in the provision of national government services provided for Wales.
  3. ^ "This category could include Polish responses from the country specific question for Scotland which would have been outputted to 'Other White' and then included under 'White' for UK. 'White Africans' may also have been recorded under 'Other White' and then included under 'White' for UK."
  4. ^ 83.6% are White British/Irish.
  5. ^ Although the United Kingdom has traditionally been seen as a unitary state, an alternative description of the UK as a "union state", put forward by, among others, Vernon Bogdanor,[8] has become increasingly influential since the adoption of devolution in the 1990s.[9] A union state is considered to differ from a unitary state in that while it maintains a central authority it also recognises the authority of historic rights and infrastructures of its component parts.[10][11]
  6. ^ Some of the devolved countries, Crown dependencies and British Overseas Territories issue their own sterling banknotes or currencies, or use another nation's currency. See List of British currencies for more information
  7. ^ Also in observed by the Crown dependencies, and in the two British Overseas Territories of Gibraltar and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (though in the latter, without daylight saving time). For further information, see Time in the United Kingdom#British territories.
  8. ^ Except two overseas territories: Gibraltar and the British Indian Ocean Territory.
  9. ^ Excludes most overseas territories.
  10. ^ The .gb domain is also reserved for the UK, but has been little used.
