Purpose
This template is intended to be used on year in country categories (for example, Category:2008 in Canada or Category:1538 in England). It creates a "timeline" style table of links to categories for adjacent years before or after it in the same decade (see example below).
Usage
{{Year in country category| | | |}}
Parameters
The first three parameters indicate the country and its continent(s).
- The first parameter is the country name as indicated in the category name (but without prefixes which are unwanted for sorting, these should be added to the 4th parameter).
- The second parameter is the continent where the country is located.
- The third parameter is optional: if a country is located in two continents (mainly for countries in Europe and Asia, like Russia or Turkey), then a second continent can be included here. The order of the two continents is not important. This third parameter can also be used with member states of the United Kingdom (use "United Kingdom"), the former Soviet Union ("Soviet Union"), or former Yugoslavia ("Yugoslavia").
- The 4th parameter is used for sorting of countries which start with "The" (or other prefixes like "the Socialist Republic of "): this can be left empty for most countries.
Optional parameters
|nocountrycentury=yes
— instead of categorising the page in "Category:Years of the nth century in CountryName", use "Category:Years in CountryName".
This is used for countries such as Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union, which existed only within one century.|newname=new name
— use new name for parent categories where appropriate|newnamestart=new name start year
— changeover year for new name
Simple example
In most cases, only two parameters will be needed: the country and the continent.
When placed on the page Category:1867 in Japan:
{{year in country category|Japan|Asia}}
- displays the following:
Lua error in mw.title.lua at line 318: bad argument #2 to 'title.new' (unrecognized namespace name 'Portal').This category is for topics specifically related to the year 1867 in Japan
Example using all unnamed parameters
When placed on the page Category:1954 in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia:
{{year in country category|Macedonia|Europe|Yugoslavia|the Socialist Republic of }}
- displays the following:
Lua error in mw.title.lua at line 318: bad argument #2 to 'title.new' (unrecognized namespace name 'Portal').This category is for topics specifically related to the year 1954 in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia
Example using newname parameters
When placed on the page Category:1771 in Thailand:
{{Year in country category|Thailand|Southeast Asia|newname=Siam|newnamestart=1782}}
generates the following parent categories:
- Category:1770s in Thailand – because the decade ends before the start date 1782
- Category:Years of the 18th century in Siam – because the century ends after 1782
