Partial minor planet designation is a redirect from a partial minor-planet designation, that is, a redirect from a minor planet's name to its full designation, which also contains a leading catalog number. If no article exists, this redirect typically points to a list entry in the meanings of minor planet names. Alternatively, this page may redirect to a biography or any other page that seems more appropriate. It may also be turned into a disambiguation page.
Do not turn this redirect into a minor-planet article and do not categorize it, to avoid duplication.
Symbol redirect arrow with gradient.svg This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
  • From a short name: This is a redirect from a title that is a shortened form of a person's full name, a book title, or other more complete article title.
    • Use this rcat (not {{R from initialism}} nor {{R from abbreviation}}) to tag redirects that are the initials of a person's name.
  • To a list entry: This is a redirect to a list in which the subject is an entry.
    • For redirects from a topic to a related list and not to an entry on that list, use {{R from list topic}} instead.
  • To an embedded anchor: This is a redirect from a topic that does not have its own page to an embedded anchor on the redirect's target page.
    • An {{anchor|(anchor name)}} or {{visible anchor}} template, a HTML element with id="(anchor name)", or an |id=(anchor name) parameter might be installed at the beginning of a paragraph, in or near a section header or within a table. The anchor might also be an old section header that has been edited and is anchored within or near the new header to prevent broken internal and external links.
    • Even though section headers of the general form ==(Header name)== are themselves a type of anchor, use {{R to section}} instead.
  • From an unprintworthy page title: This is a redirect from a title that would not be helpful in a printed or CD/DVD version of Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Printability for more helpful information.
When appropriate, protection levels are automatically sensed, described and categorized.

About

{{Partial minor planet designation}} is used for redirect pages that link from a minor planet's name to its full designation, which also contains a leading catalog number. Such a redirect may point to its corresponding minor-planet object article (if exists) or to the meanings of minor planet names (anchored list). The template also contains a warning, as in almost all cases, a page with a partial minor planet designation must remain a redirect; only pages with a full designation are appropriate for articles (exceptions are recognized dwarf planets).

This template is part of the ongoing effort to manage and organize minor planet redirects (see previous efforts here dating back to 2009). Any redirect that contains this template is automatically added to Category:Minor planet object redirects (non-primary).

Usage

The template creates a boilerplate message and automatically manages categorization and usage of redirect templates. Use cases are:

Redirect to "Meanings of minor planet names"

This is the most typical case when no proper minor-planet article exists. The partial designation then points to a list (meanings of minor planet names). For example the page with partial designation Pasacentennium redirects to the corresponding entry in the "meanings table" for asteroid 2860 Pasacentennium (which is a redirect).

#REDIRECT [[Meanings of minor planet names: 2001–3000#860]]

{{Partial minor planet designation}}
  • The target gives both the official naming citation with further links to the subject it refers to, and the actual minor planet designation for which no article exists. Redirect templates {{R from short name}}, {{R to list}}, {{R to anchor}}, and {{R unprintworthy}} wrapped in a category shell are automatically displayed. In case asteroid 2860 Pasacentennium becomes notable and is turned into an article, Pasacentennium should have its redirect target amended as described in the following section.

Redirect to minor-planet object articles

A partial designation should redirect to its minor-planet article, if it exists (and not to the meanings of minor planet names as shown above). For example partial designation Mündleria points to asteroid 1466 Mündleria (a stand-alone article).

#REDIRECT [[1466 Mündleria]]

{{Partial minor planet designation|article=yes}}
  • Use |article=yes. This disables the default R-template (see above). A warning message: "Do not turn this redirect into a minor-planet article and do not categorize it, to avoid duplication" is also displayed.

Redirect to custom pages

  • {{Partial minor planet designation|double-redirect=<custom-page>}}

If there is an article that is more appropriate as a target for a minor-planet name (e.g. a biography of the person the minor planet is named after), that is itself a redirect, use parameter |double-redirect=. This adds {{R avoided double redirect}}.

Additional redirect templates

If/when adding custom redirect templates to a particular redirect, please add them above {{Partial minor planet designation}}, maintaining the blank line. This will put the non-standard R-template(s) at the top of the page, separating them from the standard R-templates below, making them easier to see.
