Template:Lang-en-emodeng/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Lang-en-emodeng. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template should not be used in citation templates such as Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2, because it includes markup that will pollute the COinS metadata they produce; see Wikipedia:COinS. |

Usage
code | en-emodeng |
---|---|
style: inherit |
This template is used inline in article prose or in tables and lists to indicate that the text in the first parameter is in the Early Modern English language. It does not automatically italicizes the content by default as something other than Modern English. This can be done optionally if the content needs to be distinguished from fully Modern English. It links by default to the Early Modern English language article, but in the HTML metadata classifies the content simply as English (i.e., Modern English) because there is no ISO language code for Early Modern English.
{{lang-en-emodeng|1=|Early Modern English content here}}
The |1=
part is optional, if the Early Modern English content does not contain the character "=".
For subsequent occurrences in the same page, the link to the language name should be turned off with |link=no
or |links=no
:
{{lang-en-emodeng|1=more Early Modern English content here|link=no}}
To cause italicization of the content, use |italic=yes
:
{{lang-en-emodeng|1=Early Modern English content here|italic=yes}}
This should only be done when a passage is not likely to be understandable to modern readers, e.g.:
- Pre-Elizabethan quotations
- Particularly difficult Elizabethan and later quotations using forms that no longer survive
- When the PME content is being distinguished from or contrasted with the ME version
- The PME term is extinct or definitely obsolete in ME and unlikely to be interpreted as ME at all, e.g. Early Modern English: stonied, Modern English: 'stunned, astonished', and Early Modern English: an hungred, ModEng: 'a-hungered' [obsolete, poetic], i.e. 'hungry').
This can also be accomplished with ''{{lang-en-emodeng|1=Early Modern English content here}}''
, but a later editor might remove the ''italicization''
, mistaking it for an inappropriate attempt at emphasis, while
is also more efficient by one character.
{{lang-en-emodeng|1=Early Modern English content here|i=y}}
