Use this template to add citations to pages on the web site catalogueoflife.org.

The Catalogue of Life website was updated in December, 2020 to use new style IDs and a new infrastructure (see new infrastructure). This template handles references using the new IDs and infrastructure using named parameters (|id=, |title=, etc), while also handling legacy uses with the old-style IDs with positional parameters. New citations should use named parameters.

Syntax and parameters

Parameters

• id – new-style Catalogue of Life identifier
• title – title for citation of Catalogue of Life page
• option – type of Catalogue of Life page being cited
  • |option=taxon – link to taxon page (default)
  • |option=browse – link to hierarchical tree view opened at target taxon
• access-date – date Catalogue of Life was consulted

The template is compatible with CS1/CS2 citations and can use any other parameters used by {{cite web}}.

Results

Using archived versions of COL database (with old-style ID)

Catalogue of Life provides access to older versions of the database. These use the old-style ID. To cite these older versions use the named parameters described above and add |version=YEAR to indicate the database version (defaults to 2019).

Results

Legacy usage

Before the Catalogue of Life website update in December, 2020, this template used positional parameters to cite Catalogue of Life. The template has been modified to create links to the new website infrastructure to approximate the previous usage.
