Compliance with policies and guidelines

Regardless of whether an external link is made with a template like this one, or typed manually into an article, all links must comply with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. No website should be linked from a Wikipedia article unless its inclusion is justifiable according to the WP:External links guideline and common sense. The burden of providing this justification is on the person who wants to include an external link. The most common concerns with Wikia links are:

  • WP:COPYLINK: Editors must not link to pages or websites that violate other people's copyrights. Wikipedia has high standards on this point, and links that do not meet the standard may not be linked in Wikipedia articles.
  • WP:ELNO#EL12: Editors should generally avoid linking to open wikis, except those with a substantial history of stability and a substantial number of editors. (An open wiki is one that allows any person to make changes to the contents, without registration or advance approval; not all Wikia sites are open wikis.)
  • WP:ELNO#EL4: Editors should not link to any website, including Wikia sites, if the purpose of the link is to promote the website, such as by attracting new readers and editors. This may also represent an abuse of a conflict of interest or spamming.
  • WP:ELNO#EL1: Every external link should provide a unique resource beyond what an ideal Wikipedia article would contain. Generally, if the Wikia page does not provide substantially more information than could be included on Wikipedia, then it should not be linked.

Links to Wikia.com, and to any other websites, that do not comply with Wikipedia's standards, may be removed by any editor.
