The {{para|col}} parameter{{#if:{{{rows|}}}|s are| is}} used to set the colour of the two vertical bands which separate the three main columns. If {{#if:{{{rows|}}}|these parameters are|this parameter is}} blank or omitted, the bands are present but their colours are undefined, and the appearance may vary between web browsers.

The colour set by {{para|col}} is normally associated with the railway company or operator given in the {{para|route}} parameter; if that parameter indicates both a major company and a minor company, or a rail operator and one of its services, {{para|col}} should indicate the more important of the two. To indicate the less important of the two, the optional {{para|lightcol}} parameter may be used; it will add a horizontal coloured band beneath the text of the {{para|route}} parameter. If {{para|lightcol}} is blank or omitted, the band is also omitted.

{{#if:{{{rows|}}}|The major colours for the different rows may be set independently by using {{para|col1}}{{#ifeq:{{{rows|}}}|2| and {{para|col2}}; or both|, {{para|col2}}, etc.; or all}} may be set to the same colour using {{para|col}}. This happens even if one of them is present but blank: unused parameters should be omitted.

Where separate {{para|route''n''}} parameters are used, the minor colours for the different rows may also be set independently by using {{para|lightcol1}}{{#ifeq:{{{rows|}}}|2| and {{para|lightcol2}}; or both|, {{para|lightcol2}}, etc.; two or more}} may be set to the same colour using {{para|lightcol}}. The row-specific {{para|lightcol''n''}} parameters have precedence over {{para|lightcol}} even if one of them is blank: unused parameters should be omitted.|}}
For consistency, colours should be specified using colour templates, e.g. {{para|col}}{{tlx|Caledonian colour}} {{para|lightcol}}{{tlx|Caledonian light}}. The predefined colours are at [[WP:WikiProject UK Railways/Colours list|WikiProject UK Railways/Colours list]]. Colours may also be given in the form of a six-character [[hex triplet]]. In either case, the initial <code>#</code> sign is omitted, e.g. {{para|col|be2d2c}} {{para|lightcol|d77f7e}}.

The {{para|lightcol}} parameter{{#if:{{{rows|}}}|s are| is}} preferred to the older method of setting a coloured background for some of the text, which had [[WP:CONTRAST|accessibility problems]].
