== Usage ==
This template is used inline in article prose or in tables and lists to indicate that the text in the first parameter is in the [[Old English]] language (also known as Anglo-Saxon). It automatically italicizes the content by default as something other than [[Modern English]].

The {{para|1}} part is optional, if the Old English content does not contain the character "=".

For subsequent occurrences in the same page, the link to the language name should be turned off with {{para|l|n}} or {{para|link|no}}:

The name of the language can be forced to the linguistics term "Anglo-Saxon" instead of the literary term "Old English", with {{para|as|y}} or {{para|as|yes}}:

This should only be done in contexts where the term "Anglo-Saxon" has more currency than "Old English" or where it may otherwise be inappropriate (e.g. discussion of use of Anglo-Saxon in what are today Wales and Scotland, which are not part of England).

For subsequent occurrences in the same passage (e.g., a series of Old English to Modern English translations) it may be helpful to also abbreviate the language name display with {{para|abbr|OEng}}, {{para|abbr|OE}}, or {{para|abbr|A-S}}:
:{{tlx|lang-ang|1{{=}}<var>another Old English example here</var>|abbr{{=}}OEng}}
Doing so automatically also disables the link, as if {{para|l|n}} had been specified. Using this parameter overrides the {{para|a}} parameter.

Dialects and phases can be indicated simply by prepending their names, linked or not:

*<code>[<nowiki />[West Saxon dialect (Old English)|West Saxon dialect of]] {{tlx|lang-ang|1{{=}}<var>West Saxon content here</var>|a{{=}}yes}}</code>
*<code>Late {{tlx|lang-ang|1{{=}}<var>Late Old English content here</var>}}</code>
Such variants are not independently supported with their own <code>lang-<var>xxx</var></code> templates.
