This template is a simplified version of [[Template:Interlanguage link]]. It links conditionally to one page on Spanish Wikipedia that has the same article name as on English Wikipedia. If the specified article {{em|does not exist}} on the English Wikipedia, this template {{em|intentionally}} displays a red link to that anticipated but still-nonexistent article, followed by a link to the specified article on Spanish Wikipedia shown in the link underlying the bracketed '[es]' [[language code]]. Hovering over the '[es]' link displays the name of the article on the non-English Wikipedia, as normal. Links to Spanish Wikipedia articles are always blue; it is up to the editor to make sure they link to the intended article.

If the specified article {{em|exists}} (that is, after the anticipated article has been created) on the English Wikipedia, this template will only show the blue link to that article, and no longer to the Spanish link.{{efn|name=preserve|{{U|Cewbot}} will NOT convert this template into a regular link if either parameter is set. Cewbot will also not covert this template into a regular link if the English Wikipedia page exists but is a redirect back to the same page where the template appears.}}

Please be aware [[:User:Cewbot|Cewbot]] converts {{tl|ill}} links to regular (blue) links when it detects the target article has been created on English Wikipedia.{{efn|name=preserve}}

== Usage ==

To link to a Spanish article with the {{em|same}} title as the article on English Wikipedia:

To link to a Spanish article with a {{em|different}} title, or to multiple foreign articles, please use {{tl|Interlanguage link}} instead.

=== Vertical alignment ===

The '[es]' interlanguage link is placed in superscript by default. This can be changed by the use of {{para|vertical-align}}:
*<code><nowiki>vertical-align=sup</nowiki></code> to place the links in superscript (default)
*<code><nowiki>vertical-align=sub</nowiki></code> to place the links in subscript
*<code><nowiki>vertical-align=base</nowiki></code> to place the links on the baseline

The parameter aliases {{para|valign}} or {{para|v}} may be used instead.

== Automatic removal ==
If you create an {{tl|interlanguage link}} and an English Wikipedia article is later created, this template will appear as a regular (blue) link as explained above. The underlying template, however, will eventually be edited automatically (it is one of the tasks assigned to bot [[:User:Cewbot|Cewbot]]), removing the template and resulting in a regular (blue) link. While this is intended to save on the computational load, it does mean users will '''not''' again be directed to the foreign-language article if the article is later deleted as this information is lost. The link will become a [[WP:REDLINK|red link]].
