This template, like some other {{c|Wikipedia formatting and function templates|formatting templates}} is a workaround for wiki markup behavior.

* In this case, it allows a [[Colon (punctuation)|colon]] to terminate a minor title-line (i.e. in [[Wikipedia:Lists#Definition lists|definition lists]]) begun with a [[Semicolon|semi-colon]].

* It just provides the string: <pre> <nowiki><</nowiki>nowiki>:<nowiki><</nowiki>/nowiki> </pre>
